In 2009 we accomplished what many thought could not be done: CARE and the Humane Society of Cabo San Lucas merged to form the Los Cabos Humane Society. As a result, we've pooled our resources and maximized our impact on the health, environment and outlook for our community which has greatly benefitted both the human and non-human residents.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, in 2009 thousands of animals were spayed and neutered. We currently average over 200 surgeries a month and our Spay/Neuter clinics have resulted in over 500 additional pets being fixed!

Our rescue van goes out into the "colonias" picking up strays and taking them back to our Animal Center where they are lovingly cared for, or if necessary, humanely euthanized.

Each month an average of 20 dogs and six cats are finding loving, “forever homes”. We currently work with eight partner rescue groups in the U.S. and Canada that have successfully relocated many of our animals. In addition, local and tourist adoptions continue to increase.

Our education program does outreach with children in their classrooms to teach them animal care and kindness to animals. We anticipate that the children who do not learn these lessons at home will help to enlighten their family members. School field trips to The Center are very popular with the children from all of the local elementary schools. In addition, we sponsor continuing education clinics for our local veterinarians.

OUR HISTORY…

The LOS CABOS HUMANE SOCIETY was formed in 1991 by a group of men and women concerned with the many homeless dogs and cats left to wander the streets of Cabo San Lucas. The alarming number of stray dogs begging for food outside the restaurants and the presence of hungry cats under the tables had developed into a serious situation. The children living in the surrounding low income neighborhoods were threatened by sickly packs of dogs roaming their neighborhoods. The volunteers began the difficult task of relocating the ill and injured dogs and cats away from the beaches and streets of Cabo San Lucas.

The group became a registered, legal entity in Mexico in 1995. The center began offering rescue and rehabilitation to homeless animals in early 1998. An adoption program was formed to find responsible homes for sterilized and vaccinated healthy dogs and cats. Hundreds of homeless dogs and cats have been given a second chance to live a happy life through the center adoption program. Conscientious animal care and the value of animals is a lesson that accompanies the adoption process. An adoption fee is charged and every home screened for suitability before the adoption is granted.

From the beginning, the Board of Directors has known that the solution to the homeless animal population had to be a widespread spay and neuter campaign. The first step in making the program a success required a plan to educate the people. Animal sterilization is a new concept to the majority of families living in the low income neighborhoods; these families live amongst street animals many of which are the abandoned off-spring of their own family pets.

As we assist the neighborhoods with the removal of stray animals, spay and neuter information for the family pets is provided. Our volunteers deliver animal care information while emphasizing the benefits of controlling the reproduction of the animals living on their property.

Crucial to our success is our ultimate of goal of creating subsidized spay and neuter clinics inside each of the low income neighborhoods in Los Cabos.

The Humane Society de Cabo San Lucas is offering the only humane solution to reduce the ever-increasing number of unwanted animals that are born to suffer on the streets of our community.
